Assistant Sheriff Charles Hank provides details on the 3-27-19 incident in which an inmate attempted to escape police custody.
On March 27, 2019 at approximately 8:53 a.m., Officer Phong Nguyen was escorting Clark County Detention Center inmate Gregory Ganci to a medical facility located in the 2900 block of South Maryland Parkway. Ganci was in custody for several violent felonies and was to be sentenced that day.
As Ganci and Officer Nguyen departed the facility to return to CCDC, a pickup truck was left running in the parking lot with the driver’s side door open. Ganci suddenly ran from Officer Nguyen and got into the truck and began driving away. At that time, Officer Nguyen fired three rounds striking Ganci once in the arm. Ganci continued driving through the parking lot at a high rate of speed and turned north onto Maryland Parkway.
At the intersection of Maryland Parkway and East Vegas Valley Drive, Ganci came upon several cars stopped at the intersection for a traffic signal, including a LVMPD prisoner transport van. Ganci rammed into the rear of a citizen’s vehicle that was stopped at the light. He put the truck in reverse several times ramming back and forth until he was
able to force his way north through the intersection. Officer Nguyen got into his unmarked LVMPD patrol vehicle and began pursuing Ganci with lights and sirens. The pursuit lasted approximately 13 minutes ending at Main Street and Carson where Ganci’s vehicle ran out of gas. Ganci was taken into custody and given medical aid at
the scene. He was transported to the UMC for treatment of the gunshot wound and transferred to back CCDC.
On March 28, 2019, Ganci was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences for crimes he faced prior to this event. He has been additionally charged with Escape by Prisoner, Grand Larceny Auto, Battery w/ Deadly Weapon (2 counts) and Felony Evasion.
